MARVIN GITTLER

Former Senior Managing Shareholder, in practice 1963-2014

One would be hard pressed to find a labor lawyer of Marvin Gittler’s caliber, professionalism and wit.  Marvin is a former senior managing shareholder of the firm and has practiced law for over 50 years.  With the exception of a four-year stint with the National Labor Relations Board at the outset of his career, Marvin has dedicated the entirety of his career to representing labor unions and working people in nearly every facet of labor and employment law.  Over the course of nearly five decades, he has provided counsel to scores of unions of all sizes and in all aspects.  Significantly, Marvin is chiefly responsible for building and counseling some of the most powerful and influential labor coalitions in the City of Chicago.

Marvin’s expertise, character and experience have been repeatedly recognized in and outside of the legal community. He has served as the Chairman of the Labor Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association, has been named one of the “Top 100 Illinois Lawyers” by Super Lawyers every year from 2006 through 2013, was inducted into the Illinois Labor History Society Hall of Honor in 2001, and has received the Jewish Labor Committee Honor Award. 

In 1998, Marvin was elected as a Fellow to the distinguished College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The College is a non-profit professional association established for the purpose of honoring leading labor and employment lawyers throughout the United States and Canada. Its Fellows are elected by the College’s Board of Governors following an incredibly rigorous screening and peer review process. Fellows are recognized for professional achievements that represent the very highest level of expertise, integrity and leadership in the profession.  

More recently, in 2013, Marvin was recognized by the Illinois State Bar Association as a “Distinguished Counselor.” He received this designation for providing over 50 years of honorable service to the Bar.

Marvin has served as a guest lecturer or part-time faculty at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, and the Loyola University School of Industrial Relations.  In addition, he has served as a consultant for the American Arbitration Association Department of Education and Training.

It is difficult to overstate the contributions that Marvin has made to the firm and to the practice of labor and employment law in general. He has been central to the success of Asher, Gittler & D’Alba, Ltd., and he firmly occupies a place among the most respected labor attorneys in the country.
